At Artisan Bindery we undertake book repairs, rebinds and commissions: from student thesis and magazine bindings, wedding guest books and photograph albums, writers’ notebooks and artists’ sketchpads, to medieval leatherwork, conservation and limited edition fine-design bindings.

In an increasingly throwaway culture however, we believe the continued integrity of all books is paramount – therefore, no undertaking is too big or too small. If pages have become torn or marked and are in need of specialist repair and cleaning, we can fix that. Book covers and spines that have faded, worn, scuffed or split through regular use? Leave them with us and we’ll ensure they’re made as good as new. The majority of book restorations require the reattachment of boards and spines. Whether cloth or leather-bound, we’ll sympathetically restore them to their former glory. If the sewing of the text block has loose sections, or has broken or cracked, no problem, we can remedy that too. We also provide protection for books and documents in the form of boxes, slipcases and portfolios. Again, these can all be individually designed and personalised to suit.

Employing only the finest materials including tanned Nigerian goatskin, silk thread, acid-free boards, and marbled and handmade papers, our meticulous eye for detail together with our customer’s imaginative designs, are reflected in the unsurpassed quality of our books. In fact, we can reflect any image, regardless of detail, in leather. Unlike the majority of bookbinders, no machinery is ever used - every last detail is carried out by the hands of a master bookbinder.

Using traditional equipment including iron and wooden presses, pairing knives and brass hand letters, centuries-old methods are woven together with modern techniques to provide a tactile piece of art with an aesthetic appeal, far removed from today's run-of-the-mill, machine-bound books.
